This is a really big problem in non-affluent families as well. Parents want a label so it takes the pressure off of them to work with their own children. Their own children irritate the shit out of them and a diagnosis saves them from proper parenting. "Oh, he struggles with ADHD, that's why he can't....blah, blah, blah." It's just another way to dismiss themselves from teaching their children the skills to survive and thrive in an effed up world. Take their phones away. Take them outside, read to them, and play with them. I have always displayed symptoms of ADHD. They are trauma-derived and have affected my life in big ways. However, the skills are there, to be accessed, to find a way forward. I've never been neurotypical and I can guarantee these poor kids that the world will not bend over backward for them. Hooray that CBT is being taught in other places. Maybe the US will catch up someday.
