The Dramatic Life
So very, very over it!
I was 15 when I first went to NY and was privileged to see Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. There was nothing NOT dream-like about that experience. It was pure joy and exhilaration.
Ever since I could remember, I had been working my ass off to get my Saturday chores done by early afternoon. Because at 2 pm, the Metropolitan Opera would be airing on our local PBS channel.
I got to see the Met on that trip, but I didn’t get to go inside. To experience that kind of dramatic show on Broadway was good enough for some time, however. I knew all the songs, anyway. As a singer and musician, my life was music and there would, hopefully be time for it all.
Up at 4:30 to practice before school. Choir during school. Showchoir after, followed by private lessons and more practice. To take this fun, floaty, and flexible voice and sing arias was not only a dream, but a reality. It was hard work, but it wasn’t at the same time.
Drama rose to a whole new level during college. Music performance put me into contact with a kind of people I had only heard about…people who were in love with themselves and the sound of their own voices. Interesting, to say the very least. I hardly fit in.
